Fayetteville (AR) Alumni Chapter History

The Fayetteville, Arkansas Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was officially chartered on December 14, 1996. Its formation was the culmination of dedicated efforts by local brothers to establish a strong alumni presence in Northwest Arkansas.

July 13, 1996

The Initial Informal

The initial informal meeting of Brothers took place at Brother Curtis Smith's home. Attendees, including Eplurivus West, Gary Peterson, Errol Conner, Curtiss Smith, Greg Young, Gary Johnson, Andre Valley, Kacy Parham, and Donald Bland, discussed identifying local Kappas and envisioning the chapter's objectives. Key goals included social cultivation, youth development, political engagement, and guiding the Iota Tau undergraduate chapter.

July 27, 1996

Second Meeting

A second, crucial meeting was held at Brother Don Bland's home. Province Polemarch Brother William Burnett and Province Keeper of Records and Exchequer Brother Charles W. Morgan III attended to offer guidance. The discussion emphasized building rapport with the Iota Tau chapter, especially in light of a recent hazing-related death at another university. Interim officers were elected:

  • Curtiss Smith - Acting Polemarch

 

Regular bi-weekly Saturday meetings were established.

Late Summer/Fall 1996

Getting Organized

Throughout subsequent meetings at brothers' homes, a formal budget, fundraising strategies, bylaws, and committee appointments were discussed. Committees formed included Nominating, Guide Right, Bylaws, Undergrad Advisor, Social/Civic, Scholarship, and Reclamation.

November 16, 1996

Budget

At Brother Ossie Campbell's home, a skeleton budget was approved, anticipating revenue of $3,900 annually from 15 members.

December 2, 1996

Chartering

Brother Bland convened a meeting to finalize the chartering ceremony, which had received final Province approval.

Chartering

The Fayetteville, AR Alumni Chapter was officially chartered in a ceremony held at Brother Coleman Peterson's home. Fourteen brothers were declared charter members.

  • Charter Members: Antonio Dennis, Coleman Peterson, Curtiss Smith, Donald C. Bland, Eplurivus West, Errol Conner, Excell Lafayette Jr., Gary Johnson, Gerald Jordan, Ossie Campbell III, Vincent Henderson, Charles Lewis, Gary Peterson, and Greg Young.

  • Brother Donald Bland relocated to Canada for a new role as COO for Wal-Mart's Canadian operations. Despite his move, he committed to continued financial support and participation when possible. A slate of new officers for the chartered chapter was selected.

2009

Enduring Legacy

The Fayetteville, AR Alumni Chapter has continued to flourish. By the 2009 fraternal year, the chapter boasted 45 financial/active members and was recognized with the Middle Western Medium Size Chapter of the Year Award. In a significant personal achievement, Brother Donald Bland received the prestigious Elder Watson Diggs Award—the fraternity's second-highest honor—during the 79th Conclave in Washington, D.C.
